When I first started work as an eager young surveyor, around 1989 John wisely said to me that we are just small cogs in a big machine and that machine might splutter but will go on working, maybe not as efficiaently but still go on.

The moral of the tale was never to think you are indispensable to any organisation! I've taken those words and their meaning wherever I've worked and was truly wise words. Its only later you ever know how someones words have an effect on you and that did for me, along with other gems.
